Around the World in 80 Days and new British JES Editions

We're proud to announce the release of Classics Illustrated number 31, Around the World in 80 Days this week - you can find it in the CI Modern section here. An excellent comic of the wonderful Jules Verne tale. Also released this week is the Canadian import of Rapunzel in the CI Junior series. Find the Junior issuses here.

This month we've also released the first two of 14 new issues to be added to the Joint European Series (JES) collection produced throught last year. The two are Ian Fleming's Dr No and Oscar Wilde's The Canterville Ghost. You can find them here. The 14 new issues are facsimiles of the 13 original Classics Illustrated titles that were only ever done in the UK CI series, plus an exclusive - the UK painted cover version of Frederick Marryat's Mr. Midshipman Easy - now perhaps the rarest of all CI issues, with original copies reaching up to £1000!

This week we've started work on upcoming issues in the Classics Illustrated line, so be sure to look out for sneak previews of them on our Facebook page...

March on with Classic Comic Store!

March has been a good month for us here at Classic Comic Store, with lots of great advice on marketing to education – a channel through which we will very soon be looking to increase our interest and sales, as the classroom is the ideal place for the Classics Illustrated series.

A meeting with Newbury Weekly News - our local newspaper – has shown promise of CI appearing in its pages once again, which will generate valuable local interest, and our attention was drawn to the fact that the pantomime at Newbury’s Corn Exchange Theatre this Christmas will be Robin Hood - a great opportunity for us to showcase Classics Illustrated number 3!

Andrew at Apple Print has been very encouraging with our upcoming marketing plans and is offering several new ideas on marketing analysis. Apple Print has also been managing several new adaptations to our website of late – it’s looking great and we’re hoping to make it even better in the coming weeks.

We have had an increase in our wholesale orders from comic shops and booksellers across the UK over the last month – again, really great news!

March has also seen the release of our latest Classics Illustrated issue – number 29, Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. Another great medieval swashbuckler, telling the tale of a disgraced knight’s return from the Crusades. Along with Ivanhoe, we have released the next in the Classics Illustrated Junior reprint series – The Magic Servants. Find the full regular series here and the Juniors here.

Classics Illustrated Update

It’s been a good few weeks here for Classic Comic Store – with design and pre-press work on the next four issues in the Classics Illustrated line out of the way we’ve really been focusing on our new wholesale website - it’s looking great and attracting retailers all the time!

New subscriptions have been coming in over the last couple of weeks, including a few more renewals following our email reminders – always great to keep providing our customers with new issues as they’re published. If you’d like to subscribe to the series, click here to go to the subs page.

The time for us to begin looking at our titles for our 4th year (!) publications is already upon us. We’ve selected issues up to number 39, including Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Dumas’ timeless masterpiece, The Count of Monte Cristo and our first Sherlock Holmes issue with A Study in Scarlet. All suggestions are considered – either comment on this post, or email us through the website here.

We’ve added all new cover galleries to the facebook page, as well as sneak previews of upcoming issues…

Also on the facebook page, we’ve now loaded up some of the plain cover artwork from our catalogue. These are great images and works of art in themselves!

As we sit here in our new offices at Apple Print, we have been watching our next four issues fall off the presses with great excitement –quite a view!

We are delighted to announce the launch of our completely updated website - containing 30 different (sub) websites - with over 2800 comic books/graphic novels available to buy online. This coimcides with the publication of the latest in the Classics Illustrated series - Herman Melville's Moby Dick and the availability of Aladdin in the Classics Illustrated Junior line. We also bring to the store four new translated issues from the Greek CI line - Heracles (Hercules), Aesop's Fables, Lord Byron and Theseus and the Minotaur. The facsimile ranges now have their own website within www.classiccomicstore.com
The visitor to the site is now able to search on a range of categories which will list all the books we have availabel in that genre. So if you like Biographies then search on that - we have nearly 100 available in several different series. Similarly, if you like Shakespeare the you can search on nearly 100 of those through a category search.

A Christmas Carol and Johnny Appleseed out this week!!!

We are also now selling the CI Junior Johnny Appleseed from the Jack Lake stable out of Toronto - visit http://cijlpireprints.classiccomicstore.com/stock.asp?Type=junior and scroll down. The cover for A Christmas Carol is the painted one that was originally available only in the UK series in the 'sixties. A vintage one of this cover will cost you over £200 in good condition - for £3.25 you get that historic cover plus superb inner artwork by the great Henry C. Kiefer. In fact, having seen the new film of this wonderful story, with Jim Carey as Scrooge, we see tremendous similarities in the film CGI version with Kiefer's artwork - a real treat for fans of Dickens and CI! Johnny Appleseed is a less well known story in the Junior series but, interestingly, we find young people really enoying these more obscure titles simply because the stories are new to them. We are now selling the first twelve issues of each series in superb presentation boxes and these can also be found at the web pages listed above. This is the latest in our new series and provides a totally re-coloured version of the Webb and Brewster artwork with Norm Saunders cover. First published in the Gilberton series in 1945, it was never published in the UK series. We don't know why but might surmise that some of the art frames are a bit gory - with Justine shown hanging from a gallows and the Monster shown throttling Elizabeth - far too grisly for us young folk back in the Forties and Fifties I suspect?

Pinocchio will be available at the end of the month and The Time Machine will be published in early November - I hope you will enjoy them all.

Come and see us at Bristol's Comic Expo this weekend!

The team are really looking forward to attending the International Comic Expo at Bristol's Ramada Plaza Hotel on 9th and 10th May. We will have both vintage and modern editions of Classics Illustrated available including this week's brand new publications - The Jungle Book and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Jeff will also be on a panel on Sunday morning at 11.00 discussing the series and how it has endured for so many years.

If you are visiting Expo be sure to come along and meet us and see all of the new issues PLUS some of the rarest of all the vintage Classics Illustrated issues! see you there!

I am very pleased to announce the publication of two new titles this week - Les Miserables and Jack and the Beanstalk. Both digitally re-cloured and in perfect bound form. Followers will know that these are published monthly and subscribers will have them landing on the mat in the next day or two... Both are available to buy now through the site. Look out for the next two to be published in early May - The Jungle Book and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Busy time at the Education Show

We were both exhausted and delighted at our first attendance, exhibiting at the Education Show at teh NEC last week. We are convinced that Classics Illustrated and Classics Illustrated Juniors have a major role to play within schools helping children to become familiar with these great stories and helping to develop their reading skills. Reluctant readers in particular should be drawn into our 32 and 48 page formats as many of our readers were when we were young. The school teachers and other representatives seemed to agree with us! We sold over 25o books and had over 100 people per day asking for more information. Tiring but worth it!
